The Lost World is a novel written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and published in the popular Strand Magazine during the months of April 1912-November 1912. It is about an expedition led by Professor Challenger, a man who wants to support a theory about the existence of a land where prehistoric animals still survive. He starts this adventure with a group of men among whom a young explorer who looks for glory to satisfy the imagination of a girl he loves and another professor who wants to confute the theory. The topic of a hidden land with prehistoric animals was not totally new: Jules Verne had already written Journey to the Centre of the Earth in 1864, where the creatures live under the earth in and around a subterranean sea.
On its turn the novel will become the source for other works among which The Land That Time Forgot by Edgar Rice Burroughs, published in 1916, where lost submariners from a German U-Boat discover their own lost world of dinosaurs and ape-men in Antarctica; Michael Crichton in his 1995 reused the title The Lost World for his sequel to Jurassic Park; the latest example is Avatar, the science fiction movie written, directed and produced by James Cameron in 2009 in which the Lost World is on a planet that men want to exploit for its resources.
Il Mondo Perduto è un romanzo scritto da Sir Arthur Coann Doyle e pubblicato sul la popolare rivista Strand tra l’aprile e novembre 1912. tratta della spedizione del Professor Challenger (già il nome è una SFIDA)un uomo che vuole provare l’esistenza di un mondo ancora abitato da creature preistoriche. Parte per questa avventura accompagnat, tra gli altri, da un giovane in cerca di gloria per soddisfare le fantasie della donna che ama e un altro scienziato che vuole invece confutare la teoria. Sull’altipiano nel mezzo della foresta Amazzonica in Sud America troveranno anche Indiani e uomini scimmia in piena guerra.
L’idea dell’esistenza di creature ritenute estinte non era nuova in letteratura: Giulio Verne aveva già scritto nel 1864 Viaggio al Centro della Terra dove le creature vivevano sotto la superficie terrestre. A sua volta Il Mondo Perduto fornì materiale per altri scritti: La Terra che il Tempo aveva Dimenticato (1916) di Edgar Rice Burroughs dove un sottomarino tedesco scopre un luogo in Antartica in cui convivono dinosauri e uomini scimmia; Michael Crichton riuserà il titolo Il Mondo Perduto nel suo sequel a Jurassic Park e , ultimo per ordine di tempo, Avatar, u film tridimensionale scritto, diretto e prodotto da James Cameron nel 2009 dove il mondo perduto è un pianeta che gli uomini vogliono sfruttare per le sue risorse.
