The Mysteries of Udolpho (1794) by Ann Radcliff describes the adventures of a beautiful and innocent heroine, Emily St. Aubert persecuted, after her father’s death, by the machinations of an Italian brigand who keeps her as a prisoner in the Castle Udolpho. Her rational and inquisitive mind emerges while she is trying to discover the connection between her father and the Marchioness de Villeroi and the Castle Udolpho.
Jane Austen’s novel Northanger Abbey was a parody of this masterpiece pointing out how much this genre was followed, especially by women, and how impressive and successful was this new way of writing, especially in the younger generations’ mind. In Jane Austen’s novel a suggestible young woman, keen reader of Radcliffe’s novel, imagines strange adventures and sees people around her as Gothic villains and victims with amusing results.
In the movie Becoming Jane (2007, by Julian Jarrold) about Jane Austen’s life, young Jane, who wants to become a professional writer, meets Ann Radcliff. The older author tells her the difficulties and the solitude she has to face as a woman writer in a period in which only men could have intellectual jobs and woman had to marry “a man of fortune” to reach a comfortable social position.
