Ann Radcliffe (1764 –1823) was the woman who paved the path for a rational way to explain mysteries. Considered the pioneer of the Gothic Novel, together with Horace Walpole, she was the first woman who decided to devote and earn her living by writing and who became famous. She produced her novels at the beginning of the Romantic period and her works reflect the romantic influence in the description of the landscapes and for the exotic places. The attraction for supernatural typical of the period and of the Gothic genre is balanced by the search for rational explanations, element which made the mysterious and gloomy atmosphere acceptable giving explanation of the seemingly inexplicable supernatural that made the Gothic novel rise to a genre culturally acceptable.
Among her main works are The Castles of Athlin and Dunbayne (1789), A Sicilian Romance (1790),
The Romance of the Forest (1791), The Italian (1797) and Gaston de Blondeville (1826), but her masterpiece is considered The Mysteries of Udolpho (1794).

Considerata la pioniera del Romanzo Gotico insieme con Horace Walpole, fu la prima donna che decise di dedicare la sua vita e di guadagnare proprio scrivendo e che divenne famosa. Scrisse romanzi all’inizio del periodo Romantico e i suoi lavori riflettono l’influenza romantica nelle descrizioni del paesaggio e dei posti esotici. L’attrazione per il soprannaturale tipica del periodo e del genere Gotico sono bilanciate nei suoi libri da spiegazioni razionali, che rendono le atmosfere cupe e misteriose più accettabili dando delle spiegazioni all’apparentemente inesplicabile soprannaturale facendo del Gotico un genere culturalmente accettabile.
Tra le suo opere si annoverano I castelli di Athlin e Dunbayne (1789), Un romanzo Siciliano (1790), Il romanzo della Foresta (1791), L’Italiano (1797) e Gastone di Blondeville (1826), ma il suo capolavoro rimane I Misteri di Udolfo (1794)
