Mary Shelley was born in 1797 to well-known parents: author and feminist Mary Wollstonecraft and philosopher William Godwin. Unfortunately, Wollstonecraft died as the result of Mary’s birth and she grew up with her father and her step mother. At sixteen she met the young Romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, a disciple of her father’s teachings. Together with Mary’s stepsister, they ran off to continental Mary’s last years of married life were filled with tragedies: her half sister and two of her sons died. Mary became depressed, a tendency she probably inherited from her mother. Mary and her husband Percy moved to Italy
Mary Shelley nacque nel 1797 da genitori molto famosi: Mary Wollstonecraft, autrice e femminista, e William Godwin, filosofo. Purtroppo la madre morì dandola alla luce e Mary crebbe con il padre e una matrigna. A 16 anni incontrò il poeta Romantico Percy Bysshe Shelly, un discepolo del padre. Insieme a lui e alla sorellastra, Mary viaggiò per l’Europa anche se Shelley era già sposato. Nel 1916, nuovamente all’estero, trascorsero del tempo a Ginevra con Lord Gordon Byron, un poeta Romantico amico del marito e il chirurgo italiano Polidori. Più tardi, nello stesso anno, la moglie di Percy si suicidò annegandosi. Mary e Percy si sposarono nel dicembre del 1816. All’età di 18 anni Mary scrisse Frankenstein (1818)
La vita di Mary fu sconvolta da una serie di tragedie: la morte della sorellastra e di due dei suoi figli. Mary iniziò a soffrire di depressione come già la madre. Con suo marito si trasferì in Italia, ma Percy morì annegato al largo di Livorno su una barca vela. (1822). Determinata a mantenere viva la memoria dl marito, Mary continuò a pubblicare le sue opere aggiungendo delle sue prefazioni. Trascorse gli ultimi anni in compagnia del suo unico figlio rimasto e morì nel 1851 all’età di 53 anni.
