1920 – la moda di Coco Chanel

Gabrielle “Coco” Bonheur Chanel (1883 –1971)changed fashion at the beginning of the 20th century. She was a French fashion designer, who made  simple and elegant dresses.

Her first achievement (raggiungimento) and creation was  the jersey fabric (stoffa jersey), a machine knit material (un tessuto fatto a macchina) manufactured for her by the firm Rodier usually for undergarments(biancheria) .
Coco created the travelling jersey suit (vestito da viaggio di jersey). It consisted of a cardigan jacket, and pleated skirt (gonna a pieghe) , and low-belted pullover top (maglietta con cintura bassa) . Shoes were low-heeled shoes. But what made of Coco Chanel a popular fashion designer was the “little black dress” (tubino nero):  first made of  thin silk, crèpe de chine, with long sleeves. In 1926 it became the uniform for “for all women of taste,” (VOGUE)embodying a standardized aesthetic.
In America it was compared with the democratic black Ford automobile.
