The Island of Doctor Moreau (1896) by H. G. Wells is the story of another journey. a journey that becomes a deiscovery of the protagonist’s unconscious when in contact with the unknown.
The novels deals with a shipwrecked naturalist who meets doctor Moreau on an island and discovers that he is vivisecting animals to make them resemble the humans.
When he is rescued and gets back to England he feels uncomfortable as he suspects that the humans are all Beast Folk. He is afraid that they will suddenly revert to animalism as they did on the island.
The book was adpated into movies in 1977 with Burt Lancaster and Michael York and then in 1996
with Marlon Brando, Val Kilmer, David Thewlis and Ron Perlman.
An amateur adaptation of Wells’ novel, The Island of Doctor Agor, was made in 1971 by a then 13-year-old Tim Burton.
