In the early 1990s fashion still followed the trends dictated by the late 1980s. People preferred a minimalist way of clothing, simpler than the old and elaborated trends of the early and mid 1980s. Women liked wearing denim shirts (camice in stoffa dei jeans), neon colours, oversized sweaters (maglie di taglie più grandi), T-shirts, baby doll dresses, trench-coats (impermeabili con cintura), and black leather jackets (giacche di pelle nera). Jeans and denim jackets became darker than before and stopped being washed in the bleached acid (non si lavarono più in conegrina).Trousers used to be tight-fitting (attillati) – elastic leggings, drainpipe jeans (jeans a tubo), bike shorts (pantaloncini da ciclista). The new models became icons followed like real movie stars.
