i contemporanei – Caron Ann Duffy

Carol Ann Duffy (1955 -), was the first Scottish poet and playwright (autrice teatrale) “woman” to be appointed (nominata) Britain‘s poet laureate in May 2009. Her poems – Standing Female Nude (1985); Selling Manhattan (1987); Mean Time (1993); and Rapture (2005) – mainly deals with (trattano principalmente) issues (argomenti) such as oppression, gender, and violence, and are written in an accessible language. The poem Lost Post, written for the last First World War British soldier’s funeral, Harry Patch, moves from (parte) Wilfred Owen’s poem, Dulce et Decorum est, to underline (per sottolineare) the tragedy of war. The poet explains:  “The poem is a tribute and blessing (benedizione), even an apology, on behalf (per conto) of poetry and all poets.” In the poem she  imagines what would have happened to (cosa sarebbe successo a) those millions of soldiers if they had returned their homes and loved ones.
